Waste Pesticide and Used Tire Collection Announced for Farmers
Mississippi State University Extension announces a waste pesticide collection event to be held on Friday, February 9th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Army National Guard parking lot located at 19719 US Hwy. 61 in Rolling Fork, MS. This program is a free service to Mississippi farmers and landowners. Agricultural waste pesticides such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and related products will be collected. Car- and light truck-sized tires for recycling will be collected at the Sharkey County Landfill as well on February 9th.
If you have agricultural pesticides that can no longer be used, you should make every effort to take advantage of this service. No other events of this type are scheduled for this area for this year and is a one-day event only. To take part, you must bring any agricultural waste pesticides to the collection site during the designated timeframe.
Please make every effort to safely transport waste pesticides to the collection site. If you have weak drums or containers that may leak or spill, be sure to use secondary containment. You will also need to cover the load in rainy weather. Hazardous material placards (signs) aren't required if the pesticide load weighs less than 1,000 pounds. For shipments weighing more than 1,000 pounds, you may want to split the load or use more than one vehicle. Labeling of containers is not required for participation in the program, but it is helpful if the original labels are still intact.
The following safety precautions are recommended while loading:
1. Wear full-length protective clothing, chemical resistant gloves, boots, goggles, and a hat. Read the label, if the container has one, for special handling requirements.
2. Check for weak containers. If a vessel looks weak, repackage it or use a secondary container to prevent leaks or spills during transit.
3. Handle containers carefully to avoid damaging them or exposing yourself to chemicals.
4. Have spill control materials on hand, including a shovel, broom, oil absorbent, or kitty litter.
The following safety precautions are recommended while hauling:
1. Secure the load using bungee cords or rope, to keep products from shifting, leaking, spilling, or blowing out during transport.
2. Protect the cargo from rainy weather. Be prepared to take a plastic cover or tarp with you in case it rains.
3. Get hazardous material placards if you believe your load weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Lighter loads don't require placards. You may want to split the load or use more than one vehicle if your load weighs close to 1,000 pounds.
4. Drive carefully and go directly to the collection site. Any spills, damage, or clean-up that occurs or are needed during transport are the driver's responsibility.
No household waste pesticides will be collected. There will be a contractor on-site to collect agricultural waste pesticides in their original container or secondary container. Bulk containers will not be accepted. Again, it is your responsibility to transport pesticides to the collection site safely.
While the focus of this event is primarily the collection of agricultural waste pesticides, waste tires will also be accepted at the Sharkey County Landfill drop-off location at 3785 Rolling Fork Road, approximately one mile north of Rolling Fork. Producers and landowners may drop off car- and light truck-sized tires for recycling but the landfill will not be able to accept tractor tires on Feb. 9th. Tractor tires may be dropped off at the Sharkey County Landfill only on February 28th, May 30th, August 29th, or November 28th, which is the last Wednesday of the month for the listed months. If you have any questions about the program, please call Dr. Mary Love Tagert, MSU Department of Agricultural and Bioengineering at 662-325-4617, or Jon Carson, MSU Extension Agent, Sharkey County, at 662-907-6363.
